SEISS – Making a Claim

HMRC has started contacting self-employed individuals they think could be eligible for the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS), based on the information provided in 2018 to 2019 tax returns.

To help identify who is eligible, HMRC is inviting people to use an online checker, which will quickly confirm eligibility and then provide a specific date from which a claim can be made. They are also running a webinar that you can join to find out more. The webinar provides an overview of the Self-Employed Income Support Scheme including who can apply and how, the amount you can claim and other support available

Sadly, we are unable to make the claim on your behalf. But we can help you with:

  • using the online eligibility checker (or supporting you to use it yourself)
  • collating any information and details you need to complete your application

How to use the checker

If you wish to use the checker yourself, you will need your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) Number and your National Insurance (NI) Number.

If you are confirmed as eligible, you will be given a date, between 13 and 18‌‌ May, from which you can apply. This date is assigned randomly to help HMRC manage demand on the service, making sure that everyone who needs to make a claim can do so.

You will also be asked to provide your Government Gateway credentials (user ID and password) and to check that your bank and contact details are up to date. This is important so that HMRC can remind you by email or text message when it’s your turn to make a claim.

If you don’t have Government Gateway credentials, you can set them up by following the guidance provided on the eligibility checker site. You will not have to wait for pin numbers or codes through the post.
